To uncover the answers, we analyzed various polls and surveys conducted throughout 2023. Participants were asked to choose which state they held the least favorable view of. Here’s what we found:
Alabama and Georgia share a storied rivalry in collegiate football, especially between the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia. Besides sports, disputes over water rights from the Chattahoochee River have caused tension. Lastly, cultural and economic competition between major cities like Birmingham and Atlanta also play a role.
Alaska and Texas often vie for the title of the “biggest” state, both in terms of size and personality. There’s a friendly competition over which state has the most state pride, and oil industry comparisons also factor into the relationship. Historically, Alaska’s acquisition and statehood led to the displacement of Texas as the largest state, a title Texas had proudly held.
Arizona has seen a significant influx of Californian transplants over the years, leading to concerns about changes in local culture and rising real estate prices. Additionally, water disputes over the Colorado River have historically created tensions. Differences in political views between the more conservative Arizona and the more liberal California also cause disagreements.
The two states share the Mississippi River, and competing rights and uses of the river have caused disputes. Additionally, regional differences between the two in terms of music, with Nashville being a major music hub and Arkansas having its own rich musical history, lead to friendly competition. College sports, especially basketball and football, further intensify the rivalry.
The California-Texas rivalry is well-known. Both states see themselves as economic powerhouses and cultural influencers in the U.S. With differing political climates, California’s more liberal stance often contrasts with Texas’s more conservative one. The competition extends to tech industries, film industries, and even debates over which state has better barbecue or tacos. With the most dislikes of all the states, it didn’t take long, alphabetically speaking, to find the winner of Every State’s Most Hated State. Continue on to find your state’s archnemesis.
