Both Colorado and Utah are known for their world-class skiing destinations. This creates a friendly competition over which state offers the better skiing experience. Additionally, disputes over water rights, particularly from the Colorado River, have historically caused tension. Differences in laws and policies regarding public land use and conservation also lead to disagreements.
Connecticut’s proximity to New York has often seen it in the shadow of its larger neighbor, especially with New York City being a dominant economic and cultural hub. This dynamic has sometimes led to feelings of overshadowing and competition. Connecticut residents also frequently commute to New York for work, leading to concerns about dependence on New York’s economy.
Both Delaware and New Jersey have vied for business due to their strategic locations on the Eastern Seaboard. Corporate tax differences and regulations have often made them competitors for attracting businesses. Additionally, the long-standing debate over the Delaware Memorial Bridge tolls and the rivalry over beach tourism play a role in the state-to-state dynamic. Surprisingly (to me), Delaware did not appear on the list of every state’s most hated state as a “hated state.” Go Delaware!
Florida and Georgia have a long-standing rivalry rooted in college football, especially the annual Florida-Georgia game. Water rights over the shared Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system have been a source of contention for years. There are also cultural and economic rivalries between the states, with both seeing themselves as major players in the Southeast.
Just as Florida’s rivalry with Georgia is rooted in sports, so is Georgia’s with Florida. The Florida-Georgia game is a significant event each year. Besides this, Georgia residents often express concerns about Floridians vacationing in their state and contributing to crowded conditions, especially on the coastline. Additionally, economic competitions in sectors like agriculture, especially citrus and peaches, play a role.
