Least Favorite: Missouri

The rivalry between Kansas and Missouri dates back to the Civil War era, known as “Bleeding Kansas.” While those days are long past, remnants of the rivalry linger, especially in sports, with college basketball games being particularly heated. The states also compete in sectors like agriculture and tourism, each promoting its unique attractions and heritage.

Kentucky

Least Favorite: Tennessee

Kentucky and Tennessee share the Appalachian region and have a history of competing in areas such as whiskey production. Bourbon from Kentucky and Tennessee whiskey (like Jack Daniel’s) are points of pride for each state. Additionally, college sports rivalries and debates over historical sites and music genres (like bluegrass versus country) play into their dynamic.

Louisiana

Least Favorite: Texas

Louisiana and Texas have a friendly rivalry, mostly centered around culture and food. Debates over the origins of dishes like gumbo or who makes the best barbecue are common. Additionally, the states compete in sectors like oil production, and there’s a sports rivalry, especially in football.

Maine

Least Favorite: New Hampshire

Maine and New Hampshire, the only two states in the U.S. that share a border with each other alone, have a friendly competition over who has the better coastline, especially for tourism. Lobster fishing rights and regional distinctions in New England culture add to their state-to-state relationship. Historical border disputes have also played a role in their dynamic.

Maryland

Least Favorite: Virginia

Maryland and Virginia, both part of the original thirteen colonies, have a long history of rivalry, especially concerning their claims over the Chesapeake Bay and its resources. The states compete over tourism, seafood, especially crabbing, and historical sites. Proximity to the nation’s capital also means both states vie for political influence and federal resources.
