The State You Love to Hate: Every State’s Most Hated State

New Mexico

Least Favorite: Arizona

Both New Mexico and Arizona are iconic Southwestern states, leading to a friendly rivalry over authentic Southwestern culture, cuisine, and art. Additionally, water rights and resource management in this arid region, especially concerning the Colorado River, are sometimes contentious. Tourism, with each state boasting unique natural wonders, also sparks competition.

New York

Least Favorite: New Jersey

From the New Yorker’s perspective, the dynamic with New Jersey is multifaceted. While New York City tends to overshadow much of New Jersey, many New Yorkers move to New Jersey for more space or affordability but continue to work in the city. This leads to transportation and commuting discussions. Additionally, sports rivalries, like between the New York Giants and the New York Jets, despite both playing in New Jersey, contribute to the tension.

North Carolina

Least Favorite: South Carolina

The Carolinas, though sharing a name and much history, have always maintained distinct identities. They compete over tourism, particularly beach destinations, and historical relevance in terms of American colonial and Civil War history. Economic competition, especially in sectors like banking and technology, further defines their relationship.

North Dakota

Least Favorite: South Dakota

North Dakota and South Dakota, while sharing many similarities, vie for distinction in areas like tourism. Points of contention might include which state has the better portion of the Badlands or the better presidential monument (Mount Rushmore in the South vs. the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the North). Historical and cultural discussions about Native American heritage and relations also come into play.

Ohio

Least Favorite: Michigan

Echoing the sentiments from the Michigan perspective, Ohio’s rivalry with Michigan is deeply rooted in sports, especially college football. Beyond that, the two states have a history of competition in industrial sectors, notably automotive production. The border dispute over the Toledo Strip in the 1800s, known as the Toledo War, still finds its way into jests and banter between the states.
